Coastal Roots Farm

Cultivating Healthy and Connected Communities

In this week’s Torah portion, Emor, we read, “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger.” This week, we are featuring Coastal Roots Farm, a not-for-profit Jewish community farm and education center. Coastal Roots integrates sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom into programs that have collectively donated 150,000 pounds of food to their local communities in the last five years. Our collective donation of over $2,000 will help to feed about 375 individuals 500 pounds of food.

In an e-mail, Coastal Roots Farm shared:

"Coastal Roots Farm has been on the front lines. Before the pandemic, 1 in 4 surveyed Coastal Roots Farm Stand customers did not have enough to eat, and 40% could not easily afford fresh food. Around 70% of them shared that the crisis has impacted their employment or income. Nearly half of Farm Stand customers rely on our pay-what-you-can system. Our team expects this need will increase due widespread economic hardship. We donate up to $2,000 of produce at no cost each day we are open. During one Farm Stand day last week, we fed 468 individuals and donated nearly $1,400 of produce at no cost."

Coastal Roots Farm is hosting a Virtual Farm Tour on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 from 2-3pm, Pacific Time. They will be sharing updates of the Farm's work during the COVID-19 pandemic. To register click here
