Interest Free Loans for Those in Need

In this week’s Torah portion, Re’eh, we read about the mitzvah of giving loans to those in need. We read, “If there is a needy person among you…do not harden your heart and shut your hand against your needy kinsman. Rather, you must open your hand and lend him sufficient for whatever he needs” (Deuteronomy 15: 7-8). We are excited to feature an organization that provides interest-free loans to members of the Greater Washington Jewish community, to help them meet their financial needs with dignity.

The Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington (HFLAGW) is part of a network of nearly 50 interest free lending agencies around the world. Each Free Loan Association has their own guidelines and structure. If you're interested in learning more, find your local one here.

Righteous Crowd supported the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington in August 2019.

Righteous Crowd member and Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington's Board Chair David Farber wrote to us then:
The Hebrew Free Loan Association Greater Washington provides interest-free loans to members of the community, to help them meet their financial needs with dignity. Loans are available for a range of legitimate needs, including, but not limited to, medical bills, emergency bills, credit card debts, and more.

Shuli Tropp, Executive Director of HFLAGW shared some COVID-19 updates with Righteous Crowd:
"The past 5 months have been very challenging for our community as the financial, economic and medical impacts of Covid are broadly felt. Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington launched an emergency loan campaign in March, providing loans up to $2,500 to those who are impacted financially due to the pandemic. These loans are available to help with rent, mortgage payments, food, child care and more. Notably, applicants don’t need a guarantor and these loans have a very quick turnaround, usually between a few hours and a few days. We are committed to continuing to be on the front line helping our community achieve financial stability during this challenging time.

We have been honored to help many people get through this tough time. A small business owner approached us in April about a loan to help him cover his mortgage and family expenses. He has been steadily repaying his emergency loan as he works hard to rebuild his business. In June, we made a loan to a Jewish preschool teacher who needed funds to help her through the summer months without camp income. Hebrew Free Loan Association also had the pleasure of helping a small local synagogue with a loan to pay for expenses related to upgrading their security. This upgrade was covered by a government grant but they needed to pay the contractors prior to collecting the government funds."
